This 25000 sf rear wing of a grand French Empire building in Boston’s South End stood empty for nearly two decades before being reborn as luxury Parisian-style apartments. Overlooking the historic South End Burying Ground, these eight units are tranquil retreats from the busy city. Existing details were used to inspire the interiors, and all of of the original fireplaces were restored and reinstalled. Modern kitchens and baths contrast the existing detail but are in a timeless palette that ties back to an earlier era. The open plan allows light to penetrate through the apartments and is ideal for modern living and entertaining. The exterior of the building was extensively restored, with a new entry and rear decks punctuating the facades with modern elements. Many architectural and historical similarities exist between the South End and Le Marais, a Parisian neighborhood spanning the 3rd and 4th arrondissements; the name was chosen accordingly. This project was designed and managed by Aaron J. Weinert AIA while at H+A Inc.
