Back bay duplex

Victorian townhouses are magnificent yet tend to be dark with discrete rooms, and this building in Boston’s Back Bay was no exception. The clients, who grew up in the house years before, wanted to brighten and update the space. By opening up the parlor level completely from front to back, spaces flow from one to another and are generously lit. Traditional details are contrasted by a sleek kitchen at the heart of the home and a modern glass railing at the original staircase. A neutral palette is used throughout and unifies the living spaces with the floor below, and the lighter colors enliven bedrooms that do not have the advantage of much natural illumination. The result is a contemporary urban unit with good light, an open plan, and all of the amenities expected in a luxury home.
